The Real Reason Some Employers and Applicants Stink at Interviewing - Pathfinder Careers

The Real Reason Some Employers and Applicants Stink at Interviewing - Pathfinder Careers The Real Reason Some Employers and Applicants Stink at Interviewing We'll handle both of these gatherings in this article in a second, above all, we should consider your profession history. Have you at any point besieged a meeting? Or then again, have you had an encounter where the individuals on the opposite side of the table made you need to flee from the activity, in light of their conduct/elements? Shouldn't something be said about this diamond: Ever strolled into a meeting just to see the questioners clearly scrambling at last attempting to skim your list of qualifications… giving the impression they haven't taken a gander at it until you plunked down? Odds are, you have. Let me get straight to the point: proficient HR offices, enrollment specialists, and head trackers aside, the remainder of employing interviews are directed by individuals who think they have an idea about recruiting… however truly don't. A large portion of these individuals are little to medium entrepreneurs and directors who have never had any proper preparing in how to enlist somebody. What's more, it appears. There are huge amounts of online articles about meetings turned out badly, both from an organization and candidate point of view. On the business side, for the most part the root issue is that the questioner honestly doesn't have the foggiest idea what they are doing and winds up bungling around. Stupendously, even. Unseemly or illicit inquiries, helpless arrangement ahead of time of the meeting, absence of interior correspondence about planned competitors, inward issues that come bubbling to the surface, or outright wacky conduct all include as meeting #fails in the business section. Or then again it could appear to be genuinely typical until the meeting gets in progress. Out of nowhere, the elements change and the circumstance turns into a force battle â€" who has the activity versus who needs the activity, or who has the aptitude resources versus the organization which urgently needs them. Candidates, then again, bomb horribly generally on account of one central point: They don't have their very own feeling esteem. All through the entirety of my customer interviews, I generally toss out the inquiry: Why would it be advisable for someone to recruit you, and learn to expect the unexpected. The vast majority mishandle on this inquiry. In the event that you cannot explain to somebody why they should recruit you (and along these lines know your worth), how would you anticipate that them should purchase what you are selling as an expected worker? Forthcoming representatives additionally fall flat on different fronts including neglecting to get ready/do due determination before the meeting, radiating self-privilege, absence of a capacity to respond to questions succinctly and unmistakably, and not interfacing their experience to the employment opportunity. Be that as it may, the genuine motivation behind why a large number of these prospective employee meetings wind up smelling such a great amount past all the points referenced above (and then some) is for one explanation: Managers and candidates neglect to think about a meeting as a CONVERSATION. There is so much compel put on individuals to perform and keep what's in question a head of-mind that the discussion just doesn't occur. It turns into a revolting battleground where a portion of the most exceedingly awful things come out. To make the meeting experience a discussion, consider how you may meet somebody and build up a fellowship. Clearly, what's in question in a working environment is significantly unique in relation to a companionship, however the ideas are the equivalent: 1) What do you share practically speaking? 2) How would you be able to help/advantage one another? 3) Do you like one another? 4) How will you associate and keep a strong, commonly useful association going? 5) What might you want to do together as far as objective accomplishment? 6) What sort of group and instruments will assist you with accomplishing the objectives? At the point when a business and candidate come to agreement that a meeting is actually a discussion or conference, the weight is off and a genuine association can start.

Its something that certainly didn't occur incidentally or was it simple. It required a great deal of considering following and making sense of things. Fortunately there are some fundamental things we did in 2016 that truly set us up for some significant achievement and I am going to cover them today. Here is the manner by which we get 500K site visits every month without visitor posting which is the thing that most other online advertisers accept is the best approach to build your traffic. I dont and youll realize why in this web recording. I made an online course about how to get a similar site traffic results as I have at CCG. The is known as The Website Traffic Blueprint and right now the best way to get to the diagram is by joining Corporate Rescue Plan. Entryways close Jan eleventh so depending one whether you are tuning in, we might possibly be open. I was quite baffled with the aftereffects of long stretches of visitor posting during my book dispatch. I composed such huge numbers of articles and had a ton of incredible articles distributed on some top sites. I got some new hits however nothing was consistent at all. I immediately understood that developing my site traffic was not going to be done through visitor posting. So in 2016, we switched things up and utilized some new methodologies that worked better than anyone might have expected! Heres what we did and what worked for us: 1. Visitor Hosting Not Guest Posting This year we added the capacity to present a visitor article to our site. This permitted us to distribute one post every day and gave various points and voices on the blog. I love this in light of the fact that my central goal is consistently to support ladies and I dont have all the appropriate responses. Offering visitor entries permits others to be a piece of my central goal and give their novel voice and story to other people who need to hear it. I love helping others get their composition out there as well! This last year that I went from 100,000 online visits for every month to 500,000 site hits for each month, I visitor posted Multiple times. I used to visitor post a great deal in 2012-2014 on top locales, and it would give a few visits however not a lot of. My Website Traffic Blueprint is likewise not tied in with getting a huge amount of adherents via web-based networking media. It may be cool to have a ton of supporters nowadays yet think about what, the stage you love so much could be gone tomorrow. Instagram and Pinterest weren't even around when I began my blog in 2010 so I made my homebase at Classycareergirl.com and still have perusers returning from six years back. [RELATED: How to Stand Out Online] Obviously, I am on all the online life stages however everything drives back to my site and my blog articles. I have perusers who have been perusing my articles since 2010. They know me and keep on returning consistently to perceive what's going on in our Classy Career Girl world. 2. Get on Top Lists rather Top Career Advice/Experts Rather than visitor posting, weve had much more traffic go to our webpage by getting positioned on top records for digital broadcasts, profession bloggers and specialists. Make a solid effort to develop your image and the authority of your site and you will be on these rankings in a matter of seconds! 3. Have a Plan For Your Traffic Getting more site traffic is fun and everything except simply getting traffic isn't a business. You must have an approach to procure a pay from the traffic you are getting. I have said for quite a while that having a blog isn't a business. I discovered that the most difficult way possible from blogging for a considerable length of time however failing to earn enough salary to leave my place of employment. Prior to we even beginning, I need you to know obviously WHY you need to develop traffic to your site. What's your central goal? For what reason is it significant for you to have traffic coming your direction? Would you like to affect others and have any kind of effect with the substance you are sharing? Would you like to stop your normal everyday employment and have more opportunity in your life? Would you like to meet individuals around the globe? What is your site traffic prompting? It's incredible to get a huge amount of traffic yet I need the traffic coming your approach to have an arrangement. Is it accurate to say that you are prompting an email optin or lead magnet? Is it accurate to say that you are prompting a free methodology meeting to you? It is safe to say that you are prompting a partner interface, item, online course, training call or promotion? Why Like-Mindedness Is Limiting For Leaders

Why Like-Mindedness Is Limiting For Leaders We innately like investing energy with individuals who think like us, and possibly act and look like us. It's simple, agreeable and amusing to be with individuals who comprehend where we are coming from and share our interests. As well, it assembles our certainty to have others we regard reveal to us they think we are correct. The issue is that sticking around just with similar individuals makes us vulnerable: helpless against bunch think and to missing the contra-signs and hints that can fortify us and maybe even reshape our reasoning. In spite of the fact that it is enticing to take the easy way, it won't make you the best chief you can be. As pioneers, there is a genuine and present risk to encircle ourselves with yes men. Performance Review 4 Ways To Ensure You Meet Expectations

Performance Review: 4 ways to ensure you meet expectationsThis is not your ordinary career site. I help the corporate worker who toils away in the company cubicle make career transitions. You want to do your job well, following all the rules -- .The career transitions where I can help you center on three critical career areas: How to land a job, succeed in a job, and build employment security.Top 10 Posts on CategoriesWhen it is performance review time, the people receiving the review go a little over the top about “meeting” expectations and “exceeding” expectations. When I was managing, no one came in and self-rated themselves as “meeting” expectations. It was (90% of the time) “exceeding” expectations. You know, including me for my own performance review. Hell, I thought I was Outstanding when I obviously gave way more than the rest of my peers. Like when I was out of town for 32-weeks of the year working a company-wide project that I was volunteered for while my co workers sat comfortably in their cubicles doing the routine work. But that’s a different story (and, no, I didn’t get the Outstanding rating. Exceeds…).The truth, though, is that most people are “meeting” expectations. The truth, as well, is there is this stigma about meeting expectations. It’s all just so satisfactory and we know we are all so much more than just meeting expectations.Meeting expectations is hard workYes, management types will tell you that just meeting expectations is something to be proud of doing. We think that’s just spin. But, yes, we should be proud of meeting expectations.Because meeting expectations is hard. Think about it. How well do you meet the expectations of your significant other? Of your kids? Not easy, day after day, week after week, meeting those expectations when you think about it. How many times to you apologize to your kids or spouse in a week because you’re not meeting expectations? I do it all the time. But work, somehow, is dif ferent. When work is not different. Work, in fact, is much more difficult to meet expectations than meeting those of your spouse or kids. Most people at work don’t know you that well. Their needs and requirements are constantly changing. Your boss changes. The goals change. The company gets better â€" or worse. Different people are in your work group every year and each brings a different set of skills into play â€" impacting your work. Here’s how you meet expectationsFirst, ensure you understand the expectation. The goal or task or project needs specific definition along with what success looks like in the end. If you can’t define success, you’ll never meet expectations, much less exceed them.Second, make sure you can measure that progress so that you have a feedback mechanism to ensure you can stay on track. If you can’t measure it, you’ll never nail down the expectation or have a reference point to change the expectation.Third, tick the tasks off your list for each act ivity that helps you meet the definition of the expectation. If you don’t perform, you’ll never get a “meets” expectation much less an exceeds. If you can’t do the tasks, you won’t get to success. Finally, make sure your talking with that person who has the expectation (e.g., your manager or coworker) so that you can describe your progress. If you wait until you think you are all done, or wait until the performance review, you’ll have missed out on the fact that conditions changed and what your expectation was no longer is. And you get bit. Talk and recalibrate so that your work continues to meet changing expectations. How am I meeting your expectations? This is not your ordinary career site. I help the corporate worker who toils away in the company cubicle make career transitions. You want to do your job well, following all the rules â€" .The career transitions where I can help you center on three critical career areas: How to land a job, succeed in a job, and build empl oyment security. policiesThe content on this website is my opinion and will probably not reflect the views of my various employers.Apple, the Apple logo, iPad, Apple Watch and iPhone are trademarks of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries. Does thinking you look fat affect how much money you earn

Does thinking you look fat influence how much cash you acquire Does thinking you look fat influence how much cash you win Two things individuals frequently consider are cash and their appearance. Past examination has demonstrated that there is a connection between's the two: People abstractly thought to be appealing procure more. Furthermore, body weight assumes a significant job in appeal. An individual's weight list â€" which alters an individual's load for their stature â€" and their achievement in the working environment are connected. Set forth plainly, flimsy individuals, particularly ladies, are remunerated more than their bigger partners. Be that as it may, those investigations just thought about how others see you.In new examination, we took a gander at the other side: Does our own view of our bodies, in any event, when off base, have any kind of effect? As it were, does thinking you look fat or thin influence your wages?Knowing if a specialist's own view of their weight has any kind of effect â€" as opposed to just the business' â€" could help decide the most ideal approach to alleviate the ef fect of weight segregation on income. Moreover, a superior comprehension of sex contrasts in weight observation may help clarify the tireless sexual orientation wage gap.Pressure to 'look good'Americans burn through billions of dollars every year on rolling out minor improvements to their appearance with cosmetics, hair color and different beauty care products. We likewise burn through billions attempting to change our weight with counts calories, rec center participations and plastic surgery.Trying to satisfy the unavoidable pictures of great models and film legends has a clouded side: body-disgracing, nervousness and gloom, just as unfortunate systems for weight reduction or muscle gain. For instance, anorexia nervosa includes the extraordinary over-view of weight and kills about 10 percent of its casualties. It likewise has a monetary expense. Having a dietary issue helps yearly human services costs by almost US$2,000 per person. Why is there both outside and inward strain to look great? One explanation is that society rewards individuals who are dainty and solid looking. Specialists have indicated that weight file is identified with wages and pay. Particularly for ladies, there is a reasonable punishment at work for being overweight or stout. A few examinations have additionally discovered an effect for men, however a less recognizable one.Does weight observation matter? While the exploration writing is evident that work showcase achievement is incompletely founded on how bosses and clients see your self-perception, nobody had investigated the opposite side of inquiry. Does an individual's own impression of self-perception matter to profit and different markers of accomplishment in the workplace? In basic terms, does it change your wages on the off chance that you consider yourself overweight when you are definitely not? Or on the other hand in the event that you consider yourself thin, when actually you are not, does this misperception influence your capacit y to discover and keep a job?We were keen on responding to these inquiries since it is regularly simpler to fix your own perspective on yourself than to fix the whole world's.Our as of late distributed investigation addressed this inquiry by following a huge national irregular example of the principal wave of U.S. recent college grads, conceived in the mid 1980s. We followed around 9,000 of them beginning in 1997 when they were young people and closure 15 years after the fact when the most seasoned was 31. Our exploration followed these respondents over a crucial timespan when bodies change from high school shape into grown-up structure and when individuals fabricate their identities. The overview requested that respondents report their genuine weight and stature. It additionally requested that each order themselves every year as overweight, overweight, about the correct weight, marginally underweight or underweight. This empowered us to look at every individual's clinically characte rized BMI classification, for example, being underweight, with their perception. As in other examination, ladies in our example tend to over-see weight â€" they believe they're heavier than they are â€" while men tend to under-see theirs. What others think matters moreWhile self-saw weight, particularly when wrong, can impact confidence, psychological wellness and wellbeing practices, we found no connection between the normal individual's self-view of weight and work showcase results like wages, weeks worked and the quantity of jobs.In different words, it's not your opinion of your appearance that issues in the working environment, it's exactly what others think. Stressing if eating another treat will make you look fat may hurt your confidence, yet believing you're overweight likely won't influence your earnings.Because we find that ladies acquire lower compensation than men do in any event, when representing weight discernment contrasts, it shows up the notable sexual orientation pay hole isn't because of contrasts in self-saw weight. While the proceeded with sex punishment in the work showcase is baffling, our finding that misperceived weight doesn't hurt laborers is all the more cheering. Weight misperception is normal, however believing you're heavier or lighter than you are doesn't hose earnings. At a similar time, it's imperative to recall that albeit self-saw weight doesn't seem to influence compensation, it despite everything negatively affects mental and physical health.Passing over heavier specialists to enlist or advance less profitable yet more slender laborers is wasteful and uncalled for. Our outcomes demonstrate that extending endeavors to lessen separation based on body weight in the work environment is important.Since businesses' impression of weight is the thing that issues in the work advertise, arrangements to decrease the social slander of body weight, for example, controling body-disgracing, bode well. Changing separation laws to incorporate body type as a classification would likewise help. For instance, Michigan is the main express that disallows separation based on weight and height. We think extending such assurances would make the work advertise increasingly proficient and fair.Patricia Smith, Professor of Economics, University of Michigan and Jay L. Two of our untouched most well known blog entries include getting ready for a subsequent meeting or third meeting. The subsequent meeting can surely be a dubious one. While competitors would no uncertainty lean toward a brisk and direct recruiting process, most importantly the way to a new position can regularly be a wandering one that requires ability and persistence. Since our posts on second and third meetings were distributed, various perusers have contacted our blog editors and enrolling experts with increasingly explicit inquiries. Following is an inspecting of the sorts of inquiries we've handled. While there's nobody size-fits-all answer for a portion of these subsequent meeting situations, here are a few contemplations on what you may do in the event that you end up in a comparative circumstance: Telephone talk with weariness Question: I am meeting for a situation at a genuinely enormous organization. I did the first and second meetings by telephone and was simply required a third telephone meet. I have met with various individuals on each event. I don't have a clue what's in store from my third meeting. Any tips? Answer: Phone interviews are ordinarily used to limit the competitor pool. While having three telephone interviews is less normal, you've clearly intrigued the business enough that they need to prop the discussion up. Try not to surrender to telephone talk with weakness at this time. Go into the third meeting with a similar degree of readiness and good faith as you did the initial two. Keep in mind: You are drawing nearer to arriving at your definitive objective. You may email the HR agent or one of the past questioners to discover who will be on this next call. During this subsequent meeting, repeat your most important abilities yet additionally attempt to weave in certain subtleties you've found out about the organization through your examination and past meetings. That will show that you've been locked in and remain very intrigued. Before the ring wraps, get some information about following stages in the recruiting procedure. You should meet for this activity! Q: I went after a job and experienced four meetings. At long last, they picked the other finalist. The business at that point said they had another vacant position they'd like me to apply for, as I had established an extraordinary connection with everybody. I did a Skype meet with that recruiting administrator and it worked out in a good way. Following three weeks I got a call saying that - again - they truly enjoyed me, however had extended to the employment opportunity to another person. Be that as it may, with that terrible news, I was likewise told there was one more position and that another employing chief was keen on me. Presently I have a chance to meet for this third employment opportunity. I'm confounded. It appears that they like me, yet insufficient to extend to me an employment opportunity. Do you have any guidance on saving positive for this new chance? A: The main thing to get done is choosing whether or not you're keen on this specific occupation. Of course, you've contributed a ton of time with this business, yet does the job genuinely request to you? In the event that the appropriate response is truly, the subsequent stage is to quit contemplating the past meetings and spotlight carefully on nailing this one. View the circumstance as a new open door rather than some epic, daunting task. You're unquestionably bound to dazzle this new recruiting chief in the event that you embrace a mentality of The organization likes me so much they continue searching for approaches to enlist me! rather than Ugh, for what reason do I continue coming in runner up? The reality: Don't confuse yourself. Continue doing what you've been doing in the meetings. They obviously have a favorable opinion of you. Presently in the event that they recommend you go after a fourth position, well, it may be an ideal opportunity to think about cutting trap. Is the subsequent meeting a negligible custom? Q: I was first met for an occupation by my expected chief. I had a subsequent meeting with that individual's chief and the pioneer of the office. Presently I have a third meeting with the CFO. What would i be able to anticipate from this sort of meeting? Do you figure it may be a convention and that the CFO needs to quickly meet with me just to ensure I'm a solid match? A: Make no presumptions. While it's useful to show a peaceful certainty, being too confident can be an executioner. Perhaps you have the proposition for employment bolted up and the gathering will be a spur of the moment become more acquainted with you meeting. Or then again perhaps not. You're meeting with a top official, who could either nix your odds or impact your vocation for quite a long time to come in the event that you do land the position. To put it plainly, get ready tenaciously. The cat-and-mouse game Q: I as of late did a subsequent meeting. The selection representative disclosed to me that a ultimate conclusion would be made today and that I'd get a call in any case, yet I didn't get notification from him. I don't get this' meaning? A: What does it mean? The conceivable outcomes are unfathomable. Attempting to add something extra to a circumstance when you have zero data is disappointing - and vain. Key partners may even now be choosing. An inner competitor may have sprung up at last. The selection representative could be out debilitated. Rather than playing the imagine a scenario where game, allow it daily and afterward send the selection representative a well disposed and brief email. Amiably inquire as to whether there is any update and quickly notice your solid enthusiasm for the activity. Thank the scout for his time and make it realized when you'd be accessible to talk. On the fly Q: I've had two video interviews for the position I'm chasing. The first was with a local administrator. The subsequent meeting was with all chiefs from various districts just as the VP of activities. The organization reached me today and they need to fly me out to meet everybody eye to eye and visit the office. Would it be a good idea for me to anticipate an intense and top to bottom meeting, or does the reality they are paying to fly me in mean I'm in the final lap of the procedure? A: Video meetings and telephone interviews are financially savvy ways for bosses to limit the field. Thus, indeed, it's a promising sign that the business is eager to put time and cash in further conversations with you, however it's consistently more secure to be prepared for a flame broiling than a cakewalk. Get ready for extreme and top to bottom and let yourself be by and by shocked in the event that you fly through this subsequent meeting. Good luck! Labels

How to Handle Rejection - advice from your recruiter

How to Handle Rejection - advice from your recruiter How to Handle Rejection 30 Jul 2019 Sarah Ferguson How to Handle Rejection - advice from your recruiter Searching for jobs and going through interview processes can be a stressful and anxious time, whatever stage your career is at. It often falls to recruiters to inform people that they have been unsuccessful in their job interviews. Whether this happens at the first stage or after a few interviews, we can appreciate how tough rejection can be to hear. It’s not fun and it’s not easy, but preparing yourself for rejection is an important part of any job hunting process. Doing so will help you avoid any setbacks or knocks to your confidence and allow you to learn from the process and move forward. Here are a things to remember when handling rejection; Keep it Professional If you have been rejected for one particular position within a company, don’t see this as a closed door. Many employers will keep candidates in mind for other opportunities available in the future and will also refer you to other areas within the business as a recommendation. This means it is vital that you handle the rejection professionally and express your interest in any future opportunities that might arise. There’s always the option to keep in contact â€" don’t be afraid of connecting with them on LinkedIn. Ask for Feedback It might be difficult to hear, but it is important to have feedback from your interviewer as this will allow you to reflect on where you might be able to improve your performance. The feedback could be as simple as being more prepared with examples of your experience, how you communicate in the interview, or how you get across your relevant skills. Without feedback you won’t know where you might be getting it wrong. If you aren’t provided with initial feedback make sure you follow it up - employers are aware that it is an important part of the process and helps individuals to prepare for their next interview. Don’t Take It Personally It’s important to remember that being rejected from a job isn’t a personal slight towards you. There can be many reasons why you haven’t been offered the position; taking it personally will make the employer uncomfortable and make you look unprofessional. It often comes down to what candidate is the better cultural fit, or a specific area of expertise that another individual might have the edge in. Don’t Argue the Point Providing feedback and rejection to applicants is not a pleasant task, but most employers/recruiters will try to be as helpful and honest as possible in order to help you with your job search and future interviews. If you are provided with feedback and reasoning behind the rejection, don’t try and argue with them. Obviously this can be very difficult if deep down you do not agree with the feedback. The best approach is to hold your head up high, take on board what you have been provided with, and look forward to the next interview. For example, if you have been told you do not have the specific level of experience needed for the role, don’t argue that you feel you have. The interviewer has clearly felt your experience may be lacking in areas compared to another applicant and arguing your point will not change anything. Stay Positive Take some time to reflect on your experience after you have received rejection/feedback â€" it can be helpful to have time to process everything before picking yourself back up and moving on. Talking to family members and friends, or having the support of your recruitment consultant, can often help this process. Focus on what’s next and don’t dwell on the past. Practice Makes Perfect Once you have faced rejection and digested the feedback, use this as part of your preparation for your next interview. We often meet candidates time and time again to go through interview prep and help them to develop their interview techniques by incorporating the feedback they’ve received. It can be a long journey, so always take advantage of help offered, experiences shared, and good sources of information. Best of luck! Resume writing for police officers should also be done in such a way that it can be used in the future by law enforcement officials in any and all walks of life. The first and most important section of a police officer's resume should include the uniform details. Uniform details can be simple or complex and must be clear and simple. This includes the type of vests that should be worn and the colors and the size of the vests. It is also important to note that the uniform must be comfortable and should not cause unnecessary discomfort to the individual wearing it.The next part of a police officer's resume must include the officer's skills and education. These include how long the individual has been in law enforcement and how many years the individual has worked in different assignments. support to Internet Business Owner

Web developer / support to Internet Business Owner Success Story > Web developer / support to Internet Business Owner “I wanted freedom from the 9â€"5, to be able to live in exotic locations while still working.” * Web developer / support to Internet Business Owner Find out how from the Working Nomad! What was your role in your old job? Manage corporate websites What is/are your new role(s)? Publishing my own websites and travel writing Why did you change? Wanted freedom from 9-5 and to be able to live in exotic locations while still working. I long had a dream of sitting by a beach with a laptop and a cocktail! Are you happy with the change? Very. I am so glad I took that first small step and I thank my ex-employer for making me redundant! What do you miss and what don't you miss? I miss interaction with people, thats about it really. I used to miss the money but I earn more now than I did working in the corporate World. I don't miss commuting, having to give up so much of my life to work, living for the weekend and four week holidays. How did you go about making the change? I started a website www.workingnomad.com as a hobby and when I started making a modest sum, around £500 a month I decided to leave the UK and live in cheaper places such as Southeast Asia where the money goes a lot further. I never severed my links with the UK and have always based the business here, even when I am overseas. What was the most difficult thing about changing? Motivation to work for yourself, particularly as the amount of work I do does not always mean more or less money. What help did you get? One website helped me, webmasterworld.com, but on the site you have hundreds of experts happy to help. What have you learnt in the process? That alternative lifestyles can be as lucrative as working for big companies. What do you wish you'd done differently? Maybe started a year or two early. Can't think of anything else! What would you advise others to do in the same situation? I think internet based businesses are great because they are suitable for pretty much anyone. Very good for people that are house bound or those who have wanderlust and want to travel the world. My advice is to look for a small niche area that you can become an expert at and follow your dreams. Life is too short to be stuck in an office. What lessons could you take from the story to use in your own career change? Let us know in the comments below.

8 Tips for Building a Better Website for Your #SideHustle

8 Tips for Building a Better Website for Your #SideHustle Just because you have a full-time career doesn’t mean you can’t follow your passion. Having a side gig is an excellent way to bring in a little extra cash, or to work toward being able to go out on your own at some point in time. If you’d like your side gig to grow or need to attract customers in the first place, old fashioned methods like word-of-mouth are a great starting point. However, they can only go so far. To turn it into a true success, you need a solid website. Check out the tips below for building a better website for your #sidehustle. Start With a Logo What you do on the side is still a business. For others to trust it, legitimacy is critical. One way to help build this trust is to take the time to create an actual brand; it all starts with a logo. Think about the colors you’d like to use to promote your brand and consider including your full company name in the logo. Because this is what customers will eventually associate with you, make it something that will last. If you’re unsure of where to start, or don’t have an artist’s vision, consider using an online logo builder or working with a designer. Because your entire site will be built around your logo, along with any promotional materials, this is not an area to neglect. Clarify What You Have to Offer Sometimes side businesses start out a little messy. Because you’re hoping to attract customers, you may offer a variety of services or products without narrowing them down to a specific niche. While this is a normal step of starting a business, it also sets you up for confusion down the road. As it relates to building your website, make what you have to offer clear. Create a services page along with a mission and vision page that is concise and to the point. Consider using a list format and including pricing. The more questions you can take care of with your website, the fewer awkward situations down the road. Assume Nothing: Build Each Page as a Landing Page In the past, it was customary for websites to start with a home page. From there, visitors could peruse the site to find the information they were looking for, eventually landing on a contact or purchase page. Unfortunately, that is now a good way to lose attention and potential conversions. Because of the rise in SEO and search engine marketing in general, visitors may not always find your landing page first, especially if your content marketing scheme is going according to plan. By building each page as a landing page, you provide the crucial information on each page â€" what your side gig is about, how to get in touch and so on. Manpacks does a great job of this by working from a single landing page and keeping the other information to a minimum. There’s still room for multiple pages that go into depth on each topic if needed, but it catches up each visitor no matter where they’re coming from or landing. Focus on Navigation Structure holds your website together. This means that a clear and easy-to-follow navigation menu is critical for success. To simplify your navigation, as demonstrated by The Idealists â€" a project management site that connects brands with those who can fulfill their creative needs â€" consider: Keeping the overall number of pages to a minimum Using a top navigation bar that is fixed on each page Using submenus under each category, instead of cluttering up the main navigation Using clear titles for each page â€" trendy is great, but it could confuse visitors Keep Colors Simple Your colors should compliment your website, not distract from it.  To use color effectively, think about the purpose of your website; chances are, you want to build trust while establishing credibility. To do this, consider doing research on the psychology of various colors, aligning a color scheme with your purpose and moving forward. In many cases, natural colors that blend with nature are a great starting point; however, there are exceptions. Think about what’s best for your brand and go from there. Don’t Underestimate the Importance of a Call to Action To you, the action you want your website visitors to take it obvious. Whether it’s to make a purchase, to contact you or to set up an appointment online, you have an idea of what happens after they’ve found what they’re looking for on your site. To your visitors, it might not be so clear. This is why a compelling call to action is critical. On each page, take the time to clarify what the desired action is: “Contact me today to get started,” “Don’t miss out! Use your email address to sign up for ABC’s mailing list,” “Fill in this form to receive information about upcoming promotions.” Make these actions easy to see by listing them centrally like on United Yacht’s design award-winning site, or put them in a different color so they consistently draw attention. Then, make it easy for visitors to follow through; a lead form is an excellent way to accomplish this. Integrate Social Media Social media is a tricky situation as far as your website is concerned. You want visitors to find your social media sites and to follow you for regular updates. However, once a visitor lands on your website, the last thing you want to do is pull them away after you put the time into getting them there in the first place. Consider incorporating social media links into the bottom navigation of your site. These links are still important; in fact, 83 percent of business owners consider Facebook crucial to their success. However, by linking in a noncentral area, the pages are easy to access, without becoming a distraction. Your social media efforts should compliment your site and drive traffic back, so the links are important to include. Make It Responsive Responsive Web design â€" or Web designs that work on any device â€" are more critical than ever; 94 percent of people with smartphones search for information on those devices. Because 64 percent of American adults own smartphones, this figure is significant. Take the time to learn about responsive Web design, to use appropriate images and to modify your existing website to display and load appropriately on all devices for best results. Need inspiration? Check out this compilation of the best responsive Web designs of 2014. There’s no reason your side gig can’t become your career. Focus in on the tips above to get started on your website and keep dreaming big.

Finding Inspiration and Being Remarkable - Thinking the Seth Godin Way

Finding Inspiration and Being Remarkable - Thinking the Seth Godin Way Like a lot of business people, I enjoy reading business books. I read on all kind of topics, but find myself regularly coming back to the writers who really fire my imagination. If you’ve been on any of my workshops you will know that I often quote from my two favourites: Tom Peters and Seth Godin. Tom I enjoy, but Seth inspires me. Seth’s words help me to look at what I am doing and how I focus on my business and my marketplace. Seth and I have never met, but if he likes it or not, Seth is a mentor to me. He mentors me in a very specific and cool way. I read his words, or listen to one of his books on audiobook, and I start to see the obvious. Of course, things are only obvious once they are pointed out to us. We all need this kind of inspiration in our working lives. We need to find the work or words of others to help us broaden our minds. If we don’t have that inspirational role model, we are stuck with only our own thoughts and ideas. Yes, of course, this is obvious. But only obvious once you see it. The beauty of the e-world we live in is that we don’t have to wait for an author to publish a new book, we can subscribe to their blog feed, follow them on Twitter or Google+, or like them on Facebook. We can often even watch them on YouTube. We can take bite-sized chunks of their thoughts and use these to help us think about our own businesses. Seth talks a lot about being remarkable. Being different and standing out, finding your ‘purple cow’. Being a leader. Getting to that point, however, requires us to think about what we want to achieve, how we want to be known and how do we get there. It requires us to take time away from our desks, open our minds to the endless possibilities around us and formulate a process, a direction, a goal to chase. In its simplest form, a business plan. Most of us will have planned our startup, our next 12 months, our new division. But the constant appraisal and re-appraisal of our businesses by seeking inspiration from others can be the difference that it takes to make us get to remarkable. Be remarkable. Take inspiration. Whats the Number One Interview Question to Ask

Whats the Number One Interview Question to Ask We all have one. That killer question that nobody else has thought of. The one that will tell you everything you need to know about that candidate. The one you wished you were asked when you were being interviewed. There are some that will stay with you forever and you hope your candidates will too. Weve asked our panel of recruitment experts their one interview question they never fail to ask. Leela Srinivasan I love to ask candidates, “Tell me about the last piece of constructive feedback you received, and what you did as a result.” It helps me understand the candidate’s opportunities to improve that their boss or co-workers have identified in the past. It exposes their humility and self-awareness (or, sometimes their lack of it). It gives me a window into how they generally process negative feedback and approach self-improvement. If they choose something too far back in the past, I ask them to give me another, more recent example. We should all constantly be learning from our mistakes. Leela Srinivasan, Chief Marketing Officer at Lever. Amy Volas What are you seeing in the market that excites you/why and on the flip side of the coin what’s happening in the industry that concerns you/why? Amy Volas is  Chieftain of Avenue Talent Partners. Lars Schmidt Whats the best part of your job? Its a simple question, but the answers can really illuminate a candidates drivers and shed light on things traditional interview questions might not. Understanding whats important to candidates will help you gauge how your opportunity aligns with their value drivers and things that make them happy Lars Schmidt  is the Founder of Amplify. Chad MacRae Recently, I’ve been asking: What makes you laugh? The question lightens the mood, and it helps me assess the fit with the hiring manager and team. Chad MacRae is the Founder of Recruiting Social. Stacy Zapar My favorite interview question is one I always ask and encourage my hiring team to ask as well. At the end of each interview (phone and in-person), I ask Is there anything additional that didnt come up today that you think would be helpful for me to know? Youll be amazed at the information you gather. Relevant project work, competing offer deadlines, background check concerns, visa issues, awards and achievements, etc. The open nature of the question allows all sorts of information to come out that will help you make a much more informed decision. Its also great for candidate experience because no one will leave the interview feeling that there was something important that was left unsaid. Try it and let me know how it turns out for you!? Stacy is the Founder of Tenfold The Talent Agency. John Feldmann “If chosen for this position, how will you evaluate your own success?” If the candidate’s answer focuses on continuous learning, contributing in a team environment or adding to the company’s bottom line, it’s a good sign. If their answer involves salary or promotions, it’s an indicator that they’re less concerned with what they can contribute, but rather what the company can do for them. Even if their priorities are salary and promotions, they should at least be clever enough to emphasize different priorities for the interview. John Feldmann  is a writer for Insperity Recruiting Services. Maren Hogan “Why do you want to work here?” You already have all the technical details about their skills, experience, background, etc. from the resume. Dig into what interested them to come to you. Was it money? Perks? Culture? Were they inspired by your mission or did they hear what a great place it is to work? These details will let you know they’ve done the research and actually want to work for you because they saw something they like, not just because there was a slot open Maren Hogan is CEO and Founder of Red Branch Media. Craig Fisher Why would you want to work with me?.   Anyone can research a company.   But a shrewd candidate will equally research the interviewer.   Business is about relationships. Craig Fisher is  Head of Employer Brand, CA Technologies, and Allegis Global Solutions. Erin Wilson What do you want? Just like that. I have spoken to more than 20,000 job seekers in my career. Almost 100% of those conversations started with this question. I believe the only thing that matters is what you (the jobseeker) wants. As we proceed and you perhaps have other interview activity, my job is to advocate for you yes but above all support the best decision for your career whether that is my organization or another. In order to objectively guide you, I need to know what you want at the core. Erin Wilson  is Founder and Talent Engineer at Hirepool.io Will Staney The best interview question to ask is one I have asked many times before, “Is it better to be perfect and late or good and on time?” The idea behind this question is to understand someone’s motive and if they’re paralyzed by perfection or if they understand when good is enough. You can always tweak something to make it better, but at some point you have to pull the trigger and ship whatever it is your building out. Will is the  Founder Principal Consultant at Proactive Talent Strategies.
